On Sunday 23 June 2013, Dave Ascough and and a team of 8 willing volunteers braved the weather and climbed Scafell Pike to remove litter left behind by less considerate members of the walking fraternity.

They ascended form Wasdale Green to the summit, and back via the National Trust Campsite. They found less litter than the last litter pick in September 2012, but still managed to net 10 bin bags worth of junk.

Dave said, "looking at the type of rubbish that we collected it's obvious that the majority of it is being left by people doing challenge events - energy gel wrappers, energy drinks bottles and banana skins."

Dave went on to say that he was concerned about "the number of glow sticks being left on Cairns. It seems that there are a lot of people relying on these markers as a means of navigating on and off the summit, which is clearly an unsafe practise."

Dave runs Dave Ascough Mountain Leading, who are navigation training specialists.
