Thoughts are with the chap's family.

We don't know what happened to him, but the area in which he was found was very remote and certainly no mobile phone coverage. When in such remote areas it's sensible for walkers to carry a satellite messenger device, in tracking mode, especially when walking alone. These devices communicate your location with Earth orbiting satellites and make your position available via the web to those who you choose. In the situation of not returning or calling home by a given time, your emergency point of contact will be aware of your last tracked position. If you'd been injured and unable to walk for help or press the emergency button of the satellite messenger, the emergency services will be able to locate you quickly once reported missing.
