Understand how long it takes to travel a certain distance

Time Taken

At a basic level you can estimate distance travelled by understanding how long it takes you to walk a particular distance. To keep the maths simple, let's assume that you walk at 4km per hour, meaning that it takes you 15 minutes to travel 1km, equating to one grid square of an OS map. Dividing that down, it would take 1.5 minutes to walk 100 metres.

The simple measure above becomes more complicated when the ground is not flat, is rocky, or maybe your normal pace is slowed by others in the group. Nevertheless, understanding how long it takes you to walk a set distance (100 metres is a good measure) over different types of terrain and gradient.

For the process to work, you obviously have to have a watch capable of keeping accurate time and a pen/pencil with which to note position and start/end times.

With practice, measuring distance by time can work well, usually on reasonably flat and easy ground, becoming less accurate when your pace changes for any reason.
