A more structured approach to searching for land features may be required if you cannot initially re-locate yourself

Searching in the context of relocation, is a structured attempt to find a specific location on the ground, perhaps a summit cairn, and is particularly used in situations of poor visibility.

There will be times when you've paid close attention to your navigation in poor visibility, only encounter a situation where you cannot find the landmark that you're looking for. You need to take a structured approach to searching for that landmark, else it will be too easy to become disorientated and undo the hard work of your navigation thus far.

If you're in a group, spread out in a line, ensuring that each person can still see the next in line. This method benefits from the ability to remain at the point where your navigation determined that the target should be located, but safely extending vision into the mist.
