Before getting into various navigational techniques using a compass, we’ll first explore how to use the mechanics of the holding the compass properly.

Non-Signing Compass Hold

  • hold the compass horizontally

  • arms length and 45° away from you – in centre of body

  • have a good view of needle and orientating arrow

  • always rotate your whole body to the direction of the compass

  • ensure no metal, magnetic or electronic objects around that could interfere with compass operation
