Washing & re-proofing your waterproof can increase its performance after time

Waterproof Care

A well used outer jacket will have a build up on dirt and grim that will collect on the internal breathable membrane, clogging it up and making it less effective. Your jacket will have specific care instructions but generally speaking you will need to take the following steps to restore your jacket's breathability:

  • clean the washing machine of any built-up detergent, including soap trays
  • run it on a cycle without any load so that non-visible detergent is removed
  • use pure soap flakes or specialist washing agent, such as Nikwax Tech Wash
  • re-proof the outer fabric with specialist proofer, such as Nikwax ® TX Direct
  • tumble dry and then iron

Quite how often you'll need to wash your jacket does of course depend on how much you use it, but if water stops 'beading-up' and starts to soak in to the outer fabric, that's a sure sign that a wash and re-proof is required. See the video below.

Top Tip

Make a separate note of your jacket’s care instructions, as it’s not uncommon for labels to fade over time and regular use.
