Snow Shoes

Progress across snow can be slow. Speed it up with a pair of snow shoes

Snow Shoes

Walking in virgin snow can be great fun, but when it starts to get too deep your progress will be slowed to a snail's pace and you'll use more energy to travel less distance. A pair of snow shoes can speed things up, with you gliding over the snow rather than sinking into it. Walking poles also come into their own in snow, as long as they're fitted with snow baskets. If the ground becomes rocky or icy, you may have to remove the shoes and switch to crampons. However, there are some products on the market that allow the big show shoe itself to be removed, leaving your boot equipped with a front foot walking crampon, suitable for mild icy footpaths but no more.

Avalanche Risk
