Bogs

Bogs

Bogs take extra time to negotiate & do present a danger

Bogs

Seeing a friend go calf deep in a bog can be hilarious, but there can come a point where the bog is deep enough to cause real danger, especially if walking alone. Peak District based Mountain Rescue Teams do get called out to extract people from bogs!

Aside from getting stuck in a bog, negotiating your way around or safely through one will take a lot longer than an easy path of the same distance. Factor this into your timing for that leg of the route.

Tips

  • Take your time crossing
  • Explore all available routes and choose your steps wisely
  • Walking poles with baskets can assist, as they'll distribute your weight more evenly
  • When crossing in poor visibility, keep a track of your intended route - leap-frogging may be your best technique - even if visibility is ok, as it's easy to lose track of your direction in such situations
